Recycling Programs PDF Print E-mail

Sierra Vista has an extensive and proactive history in recycling and reuse programs. This is reflected in the City's award winning Compost Program, which has been in operation for over 17 years, as well as annual city-wide opportunities for Phone Books and Christmas Tree recycling; annual E-Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste events; and reuse of household paint for a Graffiti Abatement Program. In addition to these traditional recycling efforts, the City also focuses on the environment through their Watertight Rebate and Adopt-A-Wash Programs. These combined programs and community participation opportunities, illustrate the City's avid commitment towards good environmental stewardship, and also reflect that there are many ways to take pride in and protect our environment despite the challenges faced by rural communities in Southeastern Arizona. These efforts indicate the positive approach that the City of Sierra Vista takes to reduce the amount of trash going into the landfill.

Additional materials can also be dropped off at the following location

County Refuse Transfer Station
Location: SR 90 East @ Mile Post 325
Materials Accepted: Tires, lead acid batteries,
antifreeze, motor oil, appliances.

Note: Local markets are not available to support the recycling of glass. The sorting and transportation costs associated with these products exceed their market value. However, they are relatively clean, stable waste products that do not pose a problem to our landfill.

While the compost and phone book programs continue to receive accolades as the best in the state, all of the city's recycling programs have been very successful. The annual Christmas tree recycling program continues successfully diverting cut trees from the landfill for conversion into compost and mulch.

Internally, the city government recycles its own motor oil, solvents, car batteries, oil filters, scrap metal, anti-freeze, freon, street signs, steel drums, used tires, concrete sidewalk rubble, and asphalt road millings.
