Learn more about the New Residential Curbside Recycling Program
Q. What is an automated collection service?
A. An automated curbside recycling collection service is a program offered by the City where a truck with a mechanical arm empties the recycling container contents into a truck automatically, instead of workers manually lifting recycling bags into a truck. This collection process provides greater safety for workers and greater efficiencies in collection costs and operations. The "automated" service is also on a regular schedule and recyclables will be automatically picked up once a month, on certain Wednesdays, depending on which regular refuse route you are assigned.
Q. How does the New Residential Curbside Recycling Program work?
A. City Residential Refuse Customers should place the blue recycling container out to the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the day that their recyclables are scheduled to be picked up. The container should face the street with the wheels against the curb. Place only currently accepted recycling materials into the container. Trucks will come by on the scheduled collection day and empty the container. Residents participating in this recycling program will no longer be required to "call in" and request a recycle pick up.
Q. Why are we using a 95-gallon recycling container?
A. Providing 95-gallon recycling containers will allow for the expansion of recycling commodities in the future. Investing in the larger size containers now will avoid purchasing larger containers in the future as the program grows and adds new materials.
Q. Do I have to buy the blue recycling container?
A. No, you do not have to buy the new, blue recycling container. A portion of the cost of the container was funded through Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) grant. The blue recycling container will remain the property of the City.
Q. Can I get an extra blue recycling container?
A. During the introduction of the New Residential Curbside Recycling Program, the goal is to get a container to each City Refuse Customer. After this has been achieved, those Residential Refuse Customers who would like a second blue recycling container can request one for a nominal fee.
Q. What can I put in the blue recycling container?
A. Those recyclable items currently being accepted include aluminum cans, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, phone books, cardboard, chip board, and type #1 and #2 plastics. Please remove all materials, packaging, and other items from inside of boxes; and empty and lightly rinse the #1 and #2 plastics (no lids).
Q. When is my recycling collection day?
A. Residential Refuse Customers participating in the New Residential Curbside Recycling Program will initially receive one recycling pick up each month on a designated Wednesday. If you receive regular trash service on Monday and Thursday, will receive a recycling pick up the first Wednesday of each month. If you receive regular trash service on Tuesday and Friday, will receive a recycling pick up on the third Wednesday of each month. Each new recycling participant will receive a yearly schedule outlining the regular recycle collection days.
