STORMWATER MANAGEMENT
What is stormwater runoff and why is it a problem?
Stormwater runoff occurs when rain flows over the ground. Impervious surfaces like driveways, sidewalks, and streets prevent stormwater from soaking into the ground.
Stormwater can pick up debris, chemicals, dirt and other pollutants and seep into our underground water supply or flow through our washes to the San Pedro River.
What are the effects of stormwater pollution?
Polluted stormwater runoff can have many adverse effects. Debris causes blockages in the washes, interfering with the water flow. Stormwater polluted with chemicals (pesticides, insecticides, motor oil, etc.) poisons wildlife and can affect our drinking water sources.
So what can YOU do? Here are some Stormwater Pollution Solutions!
Home/Auto Repair & Improvements:
* Sweep up and properly dispose of debris.
* Use hazardous substances sparingly, store carefully, and dispose of properly. (Use nontoxic, biodegradable, recycled materials and recyclable products whenever possible.)
* Repair automotive leaks. Clean up spills with an absorbent substance like cat litter—don’t rinse them away.
